A mission statement? For a law firm? Absolutely! If the practice of law and the conduct of your business isn’t worth a mission statement, then why do it at all?
N. I. Jacobs & Associates was established in response to the direction the “law industry” has been taking toward larger and larger firms, narrowing of focus, unnecessary sub-specialization, and, most importantly, the elimination of the dimension of personal relationship in the practice of law and the reduction of legal counseling to a “product.”
We beg to differ. The craft of lawyering is still a profession to us and is still based on the one-on-one human relationship with our clients, even when, as is often the case, our clients are large or publicly held companies. Counseling on a legal matter isn’t merely pulling a form from a computer and “filling in the blanks.” It’s the combination of listening, comprehension, and the application of substantive legal and practical knowledge to a particular situation
your situation. It is based on understanding and sympathy, not processing through committees. It certainly isn’t based on creating billing by training subordinates at the client’s expense.
We often act as outside “in-house counsel” to larger entities, performing their smaller-scope legal work more efficiently than their regular outside counsel. This arrangement also keeps outside counsel’s billing “on their toes.”
